Don’t know what you got … until your turn is getting closer :)

Posted in Random Thoughts at 12:04 am by liviu.tudor View Liviu Tudor's profile on LinkedIn

Now since I parted with my last job, I got tons of emails and txt messages from colleagues (well, ex-colleagues nowadays) wishing me all the best, telling me what a shock it was to hear about me, wanting to meet me for drinks and many others. All heart-warming and nice, apart from one small detail: some of these colleagues I haven’t spoken to in ages or more than on one occasion we ended in heated discussions where bits of hair and nails flew about — that is to say that we weren’t by any means “friends” if you catch my drift.

So while being quite overwhelmed by this avalanche of messages of all sorts, I couldn’t help wondering why would that possibly be… At first, no doubt due to my self-infatuation and naivity (for no better word — I hate calling myself “stupid” :P ) to a certain extent, I thought it might a case of “don’t know what you got till it’s gone” (awwwww! I hear you say). And yes for a fraction of a second I thought I might have put a dent in the universe — and the world felt such a better place for me that moment…

Until a friend broke this spell for me by pointing out that they’re probably not missing me, but they started to realise that their time to be thrown overboard is getting closer — and in fact they’re not sorry for me, but they’re sorry for themselves since they can only see themselves following the same pattern in days/weeks/months to come.

Valid point indeed — even though I’m somehow more fond of my approach…Which one is it gonna be though? :O

LinkedIn and WordPress

Posted in News, Tech at 2:13 pm by liviu.tudor View Liviu Tudor's profile on LinkedIn

I’m sure many have used the WordPress LinkedIn application to post some of their blog content onto LinkedIn — and like them so did I. I’m still contemplating whether it was a mistake or not as the moment I’ve put the post about my leaving IntelliTXT team onto LinkedIn I got tons of emails — ranging from open sourcers wanted to drag me into projects similar to IntelliTXT to people looking for “consultancy” and trying to peek inside IntelliTXT’s technology…

And I thought my last post made it clear that I haven’t got anything to do with this platform anymore and therefore I cannot help any of the ones interested in such issues. So please do not email me such requests anymore as I’m not going to answer. Thank you!

(P.S. Of course I’m posting this to LinkedIn as well in the hope that I will start getting such junk mails :D )

Ideal Mobile Phone

Posted in Random Thoughts, Tech at 10:51 am by liviu.tudor View Liviu Tudor's profile on LinkedIn

Here’s hopefully a post that will keep growing as I keep thinking of other facilities — what would the ideal mobile phone offer and look like:

  • I really like the touchscreen ones which interpret hand gestures (e.g. iPhone, Blackberry Storm etc)
  • I also like the possibility of having both a full QWERTY keyboard and also the “standard” keypad with letters assigned to it, using the T9 technology (based on a dictionary) — specifically, see the keyboard(s) offered by the Blackberry Storm.
  • Should have though the facility to add words to the dictionary — this is important as if you work in IT you find out that there are new acronyms appearing over night and rather than switching to a QWERTY keyboard to type it letter-by-letter every time, it’s handy to have them added to the dictionary — in particular I did like this facility in the Nokia N95 phone
  • An “auto-correct” facility is also a very nice facility to have — I do want to write “I’m” every time, but instead just type “Im” and have the software change that on the fly to “I’m”; also need to be able to edit the list for “auto-correct”

Credit Crunch and Prices

Posted in Random Thoughts at 10:39 am by liviu.tudor View Liviu Tudor's profile on LinkedIn

It occurred to me the other day, while watching some “expert” on TV giving advice to people on how to shop around and get cashback and all sorts of other benefits to help them through the credit crunch. And the scenario was kind of like this:

  • first of all, buy online as the prices are lower
  • use a price comparison site (like Kelkoo) to find the minimum price
  • then go to that site through a cashback site (a site that will give you typically about 5% cashback on your purchases)
  • pay for it using a cashback card (e.g. American Express)
  • use a loyalty card so you get some points as well
  • and add a voucher on top of it to bring the price down (and there are quite a few sites allowing you to download such voucher codes)
  • bear in mind that the VAT has been reduced as well

Now that all sounds good but if you sum it all up, you’re probably looking at up to 10-15% off your purchase (which you make back in cashback/points/etc); and bear in mind that the shop will still make a profit on this!

Since shops are still moaning that their sales are down, how about bringing the price down by the above-mentioned 15% upfront (which as I said still makes the shop a profit) and therefore increase the volume of sales (which will reflect on profit obviously!)? Is it just me seeing this obvious solution?
